Jamaica wants a new head of state
Jamaica to break links with Queen, says Prime Minister Simpson Miller
Mrs Miller is probably right, it’s about time.
But
here are a few positives in the queens favour as to why you might want to hold off :
Positives for the Queen
If the economic state of Jamaica is currently bad then a New head of state will just cost you more in taxes to create that role, unless it’s an unpaid role, which means you’ll get only the super wealthy vested interest Jamaicans running for the post who can afford to do it for free. ie there liable to cost you more than the queen.
This is a mainly figurehead role, this person will have little actual power, and therefore their role will revolve more around morale boosting and influencing through the contacts they have,
It’s good to have a head of state with international reach, the queen can claim that.
By having the queen to some extent you can call on Royal Forces in emergency.
The queen is a known quantity, largely moral conservative reserved and unlikely to embarrass your nation, what you risk in selecting an alternate candidate is getting a worse alternative.
The Queen no longer interferes in Jamaican Governance or Politics, shes is mainly as she should be a Figurehead with a few fringe benefits.
This new head of state, can’t be royal unless it’s passed down the line, if it is passed down then a royal household will cost Jamaicans a lot of money ? and the candidate will probably breed enmity from others by their selection, therefore it will be some kind of non royal lifetime post, given to mainly elder states-men/women of Jamaica ? separate from the prime minister ? You may well end up with some family who claims some ancient tribal head superiority being elected to it ? your danger mainly is in making sure you get a supremely moral candidate, which is the biggest issue.
The “Royal” Carribean expression would have to go … no biggie
Negatives for the queen.
Primarily and most important ‘The White lady from England is not a Jamaican Native’ , which agreed is the biggest issue, which is why Mrs Miller is also right, it will be bonding and unifying to have a Jamaican head of state whose a native, as long as that doesn’t breed factionalism, which part of the island, do they represent etc ?
My suggestion … make the break at the next royal succession, although maybe that would be perceived badly … unless is was arranged in advance, ie her jamaican head of state title is known in advance to die with her, which would allow a period of mourning and then a fresh start, that would be transitional and would allow a good period of time to get new head of state arrangement made.
But maybe Mrs miller is right … maybe ? the time is now ? just make sure you get the right person Jamaica …
